Opening doors for non-traditional students through adult education
Whether for socioeconomic reasons or because educational services weren't available at the time, Some adults were unable to complete their basic education when they were youth. That's where adult education comes in.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the instruction provided by adult education teachers can be divided into three categories:
- adult basic education (ABE), geared toward adults with skills either at or below an eighth-grade level
- adult secondary education (ASE), aimed at those wanting to obtain a General Education Diploma (GED)
- English literacy instruction (ELL) for adults with limited proficiency in English
Educational requirements for careers in adult education
A master's degree in adult education is often required to teach at the adult level. Nearly all programs require teachers to hold at least a bachelor's degree in adult education or a similar field. According to the BLS, a state-issued teaching license is required for publicly run programs in most states.
The BLS expects employment of adult literacy and remedial education teachers to grow by 15 percent between 2008 and 2018. There are plenty of accredited online degrees available to choose from, if you decide to enter this growing field.
Providing access to education and opportunity for adults is a noble profession. Select your accredited online program for adult education and be part of the next generation of teachers.
